Long low bench, window seat or footstool from Halifax with original needlepoint cover. This long footstool could also be considered as a fireplace or chimney bench. Its needlepoint gros point cover is typical from the Arts & Crafts Aesthetic Movement Era. It is original to the piece, and in very good condition. Colors are still vibrant. The low bench is made of a sturdy wood frame decorated with plaster moulding with wooden feet affixed to the wooden frame. It was originally finished with gold leaves but parts of this finish has been covered with gold paint. The inscription under the frame says “Bought from a dealer Halifax Dr Laur? Lane? 13th goldleaf finish” with the date 1966. There is an incised name before the date but I am unable to read it (see photos). The fireplace or window seat has been strengthened with tacks and metal pieces (as can be seen on the photos) but only the bottom lining has be changed. It is sturdy and very comfortable to sit on. |
